A couple of months ago I wrote a post about how you can use Google’s Ajax Feed API to create a slide show showing photos from Expono. Creative coder Martin Jonsson took that idea further and created a WordPress Plugin for it, making it extremely simple to post photos from Expono or any other Media RSS enabled site.

Here is an example displaying my favorites on Expono

Loading...

After you have installed the plugin you only have to type the following shortcode to include a slideshow in your blog. The plugin offers a lot of parameters and options. I suggest you head over to martinj.net for the most recent documentation about how to use the plugin.

Example: How to display the latest public photos uploaded to Expono.

[mj-google-slideshow feed_url="http://www.expono.com/rss" width="500" height="332" link_target="google.feeds.LINK_TARGET_SELF" /]

Example: How to display your recent photos
[mj-google-slideshow feed_url="http://www.expono.com/magnus/rss" width="500" height="332" link_target="google.feeds.LINK_TARGET_SELF" /]
Replace my username with your username

Example: How to display your favorite photos
[mj-google-slideshow feed_url="http://www.expono.com/magnus/rss/1/in/favorites?indirect_stream_owner_id=100001&sort_by=favorited&sort_order=DESC" width="500" height="332" link_target="google.feeds.LINK_TARGET_SELF" /]
I suggest you copy the link behind your RSS icon on your favorites page to get the correct URL. If you want to do it manually you have to replace my username and user_id with your own.

Ok.. that’s it.. have a great weekend!

Google has some really great tools and one of them is the Google AJAX Feed API. With just a few lines of javascript code you can mash up feeds. Here is an example of how you can smack together a really cool javascript slideshow from an Expono feed with just a few lines of code. Basically you only have to change the feed and the options variables in the code below.

The Source Code for the above Slideshow

<script src="http://www.google.com/jsapi" type="text/javascript"></script>

<style>
#slideShow {
  width : 500px;
  height : 375px;
  padding : 10px;
  font-size:16px;
  text-align:center;
}
</style>

<div id="slideShow">Loading...</div>

<script type="text/javascript">
  function LoadSlideShow() {
    var feed  = "http://www.expono.com/magnus/album/4743/rss";
    var options = {

    	transistionTime:600,
    	scaleImages:true,
    	fullControlPanel : true,
    	fullControlPanelSmallIcons : true,
    	pauseOnHover : false
   	};
    var ss = new GFslideShow(feed, "slideShow", options);
  }
  /**
   * Use google.load() to load the AJAX Feeds API
   * Use google.setOnLoadCallback() to call LoadSlideShow once the page loads
   */
  google.load("feeds", "1");
  google.setOnLoadCallback(LoadSlideShow);
</script>

A mini tutorial on how you can split an old album into two new albums on expono.com

Tagged with:

Custom locationExpono users can now manually place and custom name locations for their photos. Simply drag the PIN and place it in the map where photos are taken, then give that location a name for easy access.

This is, for instance, great news for businesses attracting tourists.

Simply upload photos of your area and place the PIN.

Expono lets you display your photos in many ways. An album view is just one of them. However if that is how you prefer to look at your photos, then here is how to do that.

New User
When you log in to Expono for the first time, you’ll have no photos of your own. So either you go looking at the photos of your family or friends or you get ready to upload some of your own.

Upload Process
Your first move to get some of your own photos to your Expono account is to click the Green Upload Button on top of the page, no matter where you are in Expono.

When you have clicked it, you’re presented with a link to click to select files you want to upload. Files include photos, screenshots, graphics etc. in these formats (.jpg, .png, .gif)

In the Explorer Window (windows), Finder Window (mac), or Nautilus/Konqueror (linux) you’ll be able to select either a whole folder with content and/or single files/photos. In Mac you can also go directly into your default iPhoto library and choose events, albums, last imported, photos etc.

The selection is added to the Expono WEB uploader, and you’ll see the File Names and File Sizes. You’ll also see the total amount of files and file sizes. While uploading you’ll be able to see the estimated time remaining here.

Before Starting the Upload, you can create a New Album or add these files to an existing Album. In addition you’ll be able to set Who can see these files/photos. Default is Private ( =nobody can see them).

If you don’t create a new album or choose an existing one, the uploaded files/photos will be visible in the “All Photos” TAB.

Either way: Press “Start Upload” (green button). You’ll now see the estimated time and a progress bar.

When the upload is complete, press NEXT (green button).

Place, TAG all, Descriptions, individual TAG
Entering a place for where the photos are shot, makes sense only if they are in fact shot in the same place. Also TAGs added in the dialogue are for all photos. You can add TAGs to the individual photos. You can also add a description for each photo.

Click ‘Save changes’.

Find Album
The album just uploaded will be the first in the list of Albums under the Albums TAB. All the Photos uploaded will also be shown under the TAB ‘All Photos’.

Create Album.
If you didn’t creat an album you can do that now. Click the ‘New Album’ link to the right in the ‘All Photos’ TAB.

Once you click that link, you’ll be taken to the same view as if you clicked ‘Edit Album’ from an existing Album.

Only, there will be an option to give the Album a name. And select who can view it.

Photos are easily dragged from the horizontal row downwards, either as single selected photos or by holding the ‘Shift-button’ several selected photos in a row. You can also select several photos not directly next to each other by holding the ‘ctrl-button’ (mac) and click the photos you want to add, or right-click (windows/linux).

Once you have added all the photos you want, make sure to save the Album.

Did you ever wonder how you to view your digital photos without having to sit in front of the PC, or how you could let other people see some of your photos without having to log in to their PCs or their Expono account.

The answer is simple: Authenticated Media RSS

After signing up with Expono, you can do the obvious and upload some photos. But we give you another opportunity to use Expono.

Go into your Settings “Me” Arrow down and then look towards the bottom (in this page: My » Settings » Privacy). You’ll find “Authenticated Feeds Settings”.

You’ll find a Key and a URL example.
Copy this sequence from the URL:
/rss?ak=”Your key”

What to do with it
Find any album on Expono (while logged in) which seems to be available to you. It can be a friend’s or family member’s album or a public one. Paste the copied part of the URL including the key at the end of the album URL. Then copy the whole “new and longer” URL.

Then what?
Paste the whole copied URL into the Screensaver URL field, into your internet connected digital photo frame’s URL setting. Or if you are really good at it, enter the URL into your Wii Opera Browser URL field, run it fullscreen, et voilà, your TV becomes a huge photo frame with circulating photos.

This works on any expono user photo stream and album.

NB! You may see photos using this method, that are solely meant for your private viewing.

If you, as do I, have a dozen TABs open in your web browser you may have noticed that the browser from time to time takes shorter or longer breaks.

This is really annoying, especially if you have no clue what may cause this.

Another slightly annoying task is finding back to the Safari window which actually has your web service running. If you use more than one space and have Safari windows in more than one space, it is not trivial to find the correct Safari window via the Cmnd+TAB shortcut.

Luckily there is a solution for those of you on Mac OS X 10.5, using Safari. Install Fluid and make site specific browsers for your most important sites and web services (expono, gmail, facebook, etc.).

Actually, there is a solution for those of us on Windows too, but it is not as straight forward unless you use Google’s WEB browser “Chrome”, which grants each open tab an independently running process. More about that here.

What is this, you may ask. Well, a SSB is basically a new instance of Safari for each web service you would like to use. And the benefit is just that if any of them crashes, the others remain live and kicking.

In addition you get to start each and every one of them, by themselves, without even having to start Safari. They’ll have their own application icon in Applications and will act as if they were applications. If you use Quicksilver, a must for serious mac users, you just enter the name of the SSB and it starts without messing with any live Safari session.

Our latest update has some goodies in store for you. We are now proud to say that the site is good enough for you to invite your friends to join the Expono community.

There are now two ways to invite people, one is the NEW direct invitation method where you simply enter an e-mail address and click the “Send Invitation” button.

You will find the “Invite your friends” field on the left side of the front page/dashboard.

The second method has been around for a while and it includes a sharing of albums or single photos.

Go into any of your albums or click a single photo, you’ll notice in the upper right corner a link called “Share”. Click share to invite your friends to see your album or photo.

The user, upon clicking a photo, will be asked to enter a username and fill in some information about him-/herself.

Another great feature enhancement is language support. Norwegian is now added as the first additional language to the site, but the framework allows for adding languages as soon as they are ready. If you want to help, please contact us at:

Expono has been supporting Media RSS for a while, but now we have made it even better and have included authentication to increase privacy controls. You’ll find the Media RSS authentication enabler in your settings; Me (arrow down)/Edit Settings.

If you have been wanting to add contacts directly into your address book, then we have some news for you. Rather than restricting you to importing from Plaxo, Outlook, gmail and the likes, you can now add contacts from within “My Contacts”.

We’ve have improved information about Expono and what we have to offer. In addition to our new frontpage you can read about our great range of Features and our News section, which contains press information, entries from the famous “Expono Blog” and our latest tweets!

Another cool addition is the NEW Chat feature. You can now chat with other Expono users over Meebo. You’ll find the link for that right next to “NEWS” at the bottom.

Did you ever wondered what your friends see, when you have sent them a share invitation? Well, just go into albums and click on the link “URL” in the upper right corner a link called next to “Share”. Now, you’ll see the NEW landing page for your albums and single photos.

Of course last, but not least, there are bug fixes in this new upgrade to make the site work as you would expect it to.

I’ll probably mention this more often than not, and that is because I think it is important.

“We want you to become confident and very comfortable with us.
That’s why we have had you in focus, while building expono.com”

This doesn’t mean we’re going all altruistic on you. Because by you, we really mean all of us. We want to be able to manage all our photos in one place.

By introducing the feedback system, we offer you to be part of us and include you in making this site great.

[vodpod id=Groupvideo.2056654&w=425&h=225&fv=overstretch%3Dfalse%26file%3Dhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.expono.com%2Fjakob%2Falbum%2F828%2Frss%26width%3D300%26height%3D225%26logo%3Dhttp%3A%2F%2Fstatic.us.expono.com%2Fexpono-0.9.0-3050%2Fimages%2Flogo_small_transparent.png%26rotatetime%3D5%26screencolor%3D0xFFFFFF%26backcolor%3D0x0F5AC3%26frontcolor%3D0xEEDDDD%26lightcolor%3D0xFFFFFF%26transition%3Dfade%26link%3Dhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.expono.com%2Fjakob%2Falbums%2F828]
I started off focusing on you because you are the one with photos, family and friends. And a question on my mind is, how important is it for us to get all of your friends over to expono.com to see your photos?

Oh well, the answer is simple. Yes, it is important to us

  • if you want to have full control over who sees your photos, and
  • if your friends have photos themselves.

But since the web is filled up with sharing and caring sites, where anybody and nobody can be friends, we thought some of our users would like to share their public photos off site.

That’s why we built an embedding tool.
Now anyone with a blog or web site can embed their own public expono.com photo albums.

It’s quite simple really, you just open an album you would like to embed in your blog, and click the embed link on the tool bar above your album photos. You’ll see two fields popping up, and you select the one that suits your needs.

Get embed photo URL

Some sites allow you to embed the whole code provided by expono.com, while other sites only let you enter the URL of the album at expono.com. Of course you can embed single photos too.

Happy shooting
